Interesting observations today as I put down, picked up and chased plastic golf balls for four hours at Week of the Young Celebration. Watching those children chase that ball, their eyes lighting up when they finally made the hole after several tries, their expertise as well as their lack of expertise, telling them to get a piece of bubble gum as they snuck off with a lollipop instead, a few lining their pockets with as many goods as they could as we locked eyes and I watched them (never stopping them, waiting to see just how much they would take before their conscience got the best of them), watching them as they decided which flavor to get – it was all such a hoot! What was even more interesting were the parents and the ways that they so wanted their children to also make the hole. Some were patient and demonstrated, some let the child struggle on his/her own, some helped, some were impatient when at first the child did not make it in the two tries allowed and hustled them off to the next game or activity with the child bemoaning with a wail how badly they wanted to keep trying until they ‘won’. Some snuck back. Some tried once and said “See, I can’t do it!”, not realizing that there was a second ball. One younger boy watched an older girl get down on her knees to putt and he did the same thing when it came his time to putt. No matter what, I celebrated each child’s achievement with a prize. High fives all around. It was great! There are no losers. There are no failures. There are those who get it straight in with a great eye. Then there who were my ice hockey boys and girls who shuttled it in and even one who picked it up and took it over to put it into the hole. All were winners because they DID it! I loved watching it; I loved participating in it. Truly a great day! Which type of child or parent might you be in life?
